Salt Pan & Restaurant
The Salt Pans of Rio Maior are located in a valley, 3 km from Rio Maior and in the slope of Serra dos Candeeiros, already inside the Natural Park. They are more than 30 kms from the sea, at 80 meters of altitude and they strecht thorugh an area of 27,000 m2. The last of it’s kind, still operational, in Portugal.
Being 30 kms from the Atlantic coast, it is strange to find salt water here. However it is due to the existence of a very extensive and deep rock salt mine (dating back to the Jurassic period), crossed by an underground stream of fresh water. This stream drains into a well, and thus the water extracted from this well is salty.
The restaurant is inside the premises, with an amazing environment. You will be able to taste the best combinations between aromatic herbs of the mountain range, Flower of Salt, regional olive oil and wine produced so close to the complex.
We invite you to join us in this portuguese gastronomic experience on the panoramic terrace with direct connection to the salt pans.
